July 23, 2023
Last night, around 10 pm on July 22nd, I got a text from my son, Barrett, saying that his wife, Danni, gave birth to their baby girl, Romee—my first grandchild. The delivery went better than we dared to hope for.
Baby Romee is in the newborn intensive care unit for observation. She was born with a severe congenital cardiac abnormality that will require open heart surgery in a few days in order for her to survive. A prenatal ultrasound at 16 weeks gestation revealed the condition. It is called Truncus Arteriosis which means that her cardiac vessels are fused all together. Something happened en utero that caused a transcription error from the DNA to the messenger RNA which caused the ribosomes to produce the wrong proteins for construction of the vessels of the heart.
Romee will be at the Stanford Children’s Hospital for quite a few weeks and will probably be discharged in September. Because I am not vaccinated, the hospital will not let me be in the intensive care unit where Baby Romee will be for several weeks. I will have to wait until sometime in September when they go back home to Truckee, near Lake Tahoe.
Please keep Baby Romee in your thoughts and prayers.
Below are some photos of her in the newborn ICU, taken right after birth.
Have you ever seen a baby smile right after birth? I’ve delivered over 200 babies in my early years as a family practice doctor and never saw a baby smile at the time of birth.
Momma Danielle looking at her heavily monitored baby girl.
July 27, 2023
Four days after birth, Romee had her open heart surgery. The surgeon said the day-long operation yesterday went well.
Little Braveheart is in the cardiovascular intensive care unit. All functions of her body are being closely monitored, as you can see in the photo below. A tube is in every orifice. In a few days, if all goes well, Romee will be transferred to a less intensive ICU.
No words are adequate for expressing our gratitude for the thoughtful, encouraging, inspiring, and heartfelt words and prayers.
July 31, 2023
Today, Romee has been in this world for 9 days. She is 5 days post-op from open heart surgery with major reconstruction of the heart vessels, and already she has most of the tubes and hardware removed, such as the intubation tube, both chest tubes, the electrodes on her chest, and the electroencephalogram on her head. The oxygen tubes you see in the photo below have been removed as well. She still has the nasogastric feeding tube in place. The food she gets delivered through the NG tube is her mother’s pumped breast milk.
We had a bit of a scare two days ago when Romee’s eyes rolled repeatedly up into her head, accompanied a few times by her head moving up and down. The EEG showed no seizure activity, thankfully. The neurologist thought the seizure-like movements were from the medications. He reduced the dose of her pain medication which immediately resolved the problem. I later found out that the pain medication was Fentanyl, which is synthetic morphine. Barrett and I both have had respiratory arrests when given Fentanyl for pain control during surgical procedures—his was a difficult wisdom tooth extraction and mine was brain surgery. Since Baby Romee has some of our DNA, it is understandable that the Fentanyl could cause an unexpected adverse reaction.
Danni and Barrett report that all the people involved in Romee’s care at Stanford Children’s Hospital have done an admirable job. Imagine doing major reconstructive surgery on a tiny newborn baby! I find it mind boggling.
I think the hundreds of prayers and good wishes for Romee and family have made a big difference. I’m utterly amazed at Braveheart’s rapid recovery. We expected her to be in the cardiovascular intensive care unit for at least two to three weeks. I hear from Barrett that she will go to the “floor” (non intensive care) in a couple of days. Soon, Danni will be able to breast feed and make skin-to-skin contact.
What a miracle!
We are so grateful for all of the care and concern, prayers, ceremonies, rituals, songs, and good wishes. We feel encircled in love and support.
The tube in Braveheart’s nose is the nasogastric feeding tube which delivers Danni’s pumped breast milk.
Ecstasy! Danni finally gets to hold her little Braveheart. She sucks on the pacifier in order to strengthen the muscles involved in breast feeding.
Together at last! Barrett, Danni, and Baby Romee, a.k.a, Braveheart.
August 4th, 2023
Braveheart has been in the Stanford Children’s Hospital for 13 days. The nasogastric feeding tube has been removed. Thankfully, she is able to vigorously breastfeed. She will go home soon which is amazing since we expected it wouldn’t be until September that the family would be able to return to their home in Truckee, California, near the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I am convinced that the literally hundreds of prayers said in various prayer circles throughout the country, as well as abroad, have made a huge difference. Imagine only staying five days in the ICU after open heart surgery as a newborn!!
Romee will be temporarily on three medications when she is discharged. The first one is an antibiotic for the oozing at the wound site, probably related to an immune reaction to the dissolving sutures. The cardiac surgeon did not want to take a chance—even if there was only a small chance of the oozing serum being related to an infection. The second medication is for “thinning the blood” due to a tiny clot in the upper atrium of the heart where the electrical probe was. The third medication is a diuretic to help the baby pee out some of the edema throughout her body. She will be on the diuretic and the blood thinning medication for a month at which time she will hopefully be off all meds.
I feel so thankful for all the love and support our little family has received.
Miracles abound!

What a pleasant surprise to hear from you, Amy!! Two days ago, out of the blue, I started thinking about you and Tom and remembering how much I enjoyed seeing you a few years ago in Santa Fe!! And now I hear from you. I guess we’re telepathically connected–at least for that moment. In any case, I really appreciate your kind and heartfelt words. Much love to you, Erica

Oh my Erica, I’m late in catching up on your news. That does have the advantage of knowing immediately the miracles surrounding this precious grandchild. I don’t know how you were able to function during the 1st week of pre-surgery anxiety and post surgery monitoring.
It’s fantastic that Romee gets to go home soon and you’ll be able to hold her in your arms. (You’re already holding her in your heart)
Congratulations to you, Danni and Barret. Romee couldn’t have picked a better family.
I’m so touched by your message, Jane! It was indeed a time of high anxiety before, during the surgery, and shortly thereafter. But we knew Baby Rommee was in the hands of a world class pediatric cardiac surgeon which was reassuring. Thank you again for your kind words. Warm hugs, Erica

Wow, Erika
What an amazing story with a wonderful ending in sight. I have always been amazed what modern medicine can do even with tiny babies. While I am very happy for you and your family, I selfishly hope that we will not experience anything like it in October when Sarah is due, making Heidi and me grandparents. Please keep the community updates about the progress. I would love to see Braveheart crawl around the house.
So nice to hear from you, Axel. How exciting that you and Heidi will be grandparents soon! May all go smoothly and the baby have radiant health! I hope you are thriving in your new life abroad. Love, Erica

Continued prayers and good thoughts and light for healing and strength. Xoxox
I am so moved that you burned a candle for all of us. It brings tears to my eyes. I am so grateful for your loving kindness, Robin.
Dear Erica,
I had no idea this was happening in your family. I am full of tears and gratitude for the care given to Romee by Stanford. They have the best Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU), probably in the entire country. I spent many years as a Newborn Intensive Care Nurse in Northern California and took care of several babies with cardiac conditions requiring surgery live Romee. I am so happy that she is vigorously breast feeding and can go home soon. She is in the best of care. Truckee also has a wonderful group of Pediatricians, at Tahoe Forest Medical Center, I know as for a few years I worked with the Pediatrician who began that practice, Dr. Chris Arth. I knew him while he was an Intern and Resident in the NICU where I worked, they are top notch. If Dr. Chris is available to be Romee’s Pediatrician in Truckee, I would recommend him. He is highly experienced with Newborn Intensive Care infants and is a warm and compassionate person. I will keep little Braveheart Romee and all of you in my prayers! Love, Patty https://www.tfhd.com/our-providers/arth-md
Erica,
What a Braveheart she is !
I am overjoyed that she has progressed so rapidly and is doing so well.
Sending love and prayers to all of you❤️😘
Grace, your support throughout this process has meant so much to me. I am deeply grateful to you.
Amazing saga! Miraculous! Love to all
Thank you so much, dear Susan. I think of you fondly.
Love, blessings, and no looking back–only forward…we don’t know why but we expect more miracles only+
Amen! Thank you so much for those words.
Thank you for sharing this adventure! Love and blessings on the way!
Thank you, Victoria!!
Miracle baby indeed. Braveheart is one tuned-in complete being– accepting all the tubes and pokes that violated her little body, knowing that she was being deeply loved and cared for. And now receiving her mother’s milk and getting ready for a bed and new life in Truckee!
Erica, with all the short-circuiting and hijacking of of organized medicine that has occurred in the last several years, Romee’s smile and the carefully focused coordinated attention she has received at Stanford has restored my faith in medicine. Throughout her gestation doctors and nurses employed technology and their evolving skillsets to diagnose, , plan, rehearse,
and carefully perform a daring reconstruction to gently restorer her wholeness– all the while enabling her family and support structure to retain hope and confidence and now fully love her. Reality feels a lot bigger and spacious and generous
for me now, Thanks you as always for trouping on giving your very best.
Love, Bob
What a heart warming message you wrote, Bob. I agree with your assessment about the state of our medical care. On one end of the spectrum is the turnstile, one-size-fits-all, a pill for every ill type of medicine, and on the other end of the spectrum is impeccable world-class care. Stanford Children’s Hospital demonstrated medicine at is wondrous best. I’m in awe at what a great job they did. The staff was amazed at the speed of Romee’s healing. I’m sure that the countless prayers made a huge difference, along with excellent care, and Braveheart’s innate spirit. Thank you for always writing such thoughtful messages, Bob. Love, Erica
Yes to all, particularly Bob and Erica here. Restoration on many levels. Love, Margo
Amen! Thank you so much, Margo.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful story of miracles!! Prayers now of gratitude and thanksgiving, and continued healing for baby Braveheart. 🙏
Amen!
The power of prayer! What an inspiring story. I send best wishes and a prayer of my own to you and the baby.

What a beautiful baby! So happy for all of you. Prayers, love & hugs.
Thank you, Isobel!
Yay! What a little spitfire. She’ll be running circles around everyone all too soon.
Thank you, Gwen. May that be so!

thank you for your loving kindness.
Erica,
I wish I could be there to give you a hug! I know how hard it is to not be able to go during an emergency. So good to see a picture of Barrett, it has been well over 10 years since I saw him last. Braveheart is definitely a fierce little fighter! I know she has a secret weapon in her recovery – she has an AWESOME Grandma with serious healing skills! You and yours are always in my prayers and sending positive energy your way. Perri
Braveheart has some of your qualities, Perri. She is a fierce little fighter–just like you. Thank you for your kind words.
I am so happy that the outcome has been so good! I don’t think that you could have asked for a better resolution, other than not having the problem in the first place! My heartfelt good wishes go to the parents, Romee and you!
Thank you so much, Julia. Your words make me smile.
